UPCOMING EVENTS/DEADLINES: CANTON MEETINGS ARE NOW WEEKLY! 05 April 2003 Just a Feast 12 April 2003 Stopping at a Tavern on the Way to Canterbury (Potsdam, NY) 26 April 2003 Dandelion Festival 30 April 2003 Hare bids due (FINAL EXTENSION) 30 April 2003 Autocrat's Day Off bids due (FINAL DATE) Discussion Items: 1. Hare bids due by 30 April at the latest. It is the 25th Anniversary of Hare. One bid in process, others encouraged. 2. Canton Quartermaster discussion DEFERRED until next meeting 3. Just A Feast update sent by KATHERINE via CHRISTABELL. Read out and two questions posed by KATHERINE addressed: a. Can she be reimbursed for use of small amounts of her own supplies in feast. The consensus was no. In the past, people have always just donated small amounts as it is difficult to assign dollar amounts and is not worth the administration time. b. Can she re-assign budgeted monies to buy decorations. Internal event costs are the Autocrat's decision provided the event is within budget. c. Attendees are at about 40 and the feast will be budgeted accordingly. People wishing to attend or who have pre-booked but not paid, should contact MAGNUS as soon as possible. d. There are enough staff e. Entertainment will be provided during event. Anyone wishing to perform should contact HELEN as soon as possible. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments. f. KATHERINE recommends that attendees arrive in garb as there is limited change space. g. Banners are welcome h. Site is wet. There will be a cash bar providing beer, cider and wine. 4. Report on Baronial Fight Practice held on the weekend - MENKEN reports that it was a good practice with a good turnout. Unfortunately, North Bay was snowed in. Scribal workshop in the second room was well attended. Let's do this again, soon. Greyfells has expressed an interest in hosting. 5. Dandelion Festival - Cupid's Nest is available again this year for an A.S. New Year's celebration and post-rev. Crash space is available there for $30.00/room or a small fee for couch/floor space. Make reservations through Lord Eogan (613-687-4182). TRM will be present. 6. Rattan: MENKEN speaking for CENNEDI -- CENNEDI would like the Canton to front money to buy a quantity of rattan to sell to local fighters. Discussion: Pros: convenience of not having to contact SIR EDWARD THE RED for every piece needed; possible revenue earner by adding a couple of dollars per piece on re-sale; instantly available to new fighters. Cons: it can take years to sell; it is hard on the Exchequer if it takes more than a year to sell; some of the rattan is bound to be poor quality; it has been done before with poor results. It was decided unanimously that the cons of a large order outweighed the pros and that it would be better to acquire a small amount of rattan from SIR EDWARD THE RED for re-sale locally. The Canton agreed to cover costs for an amount not to exceed $200.00. 7. Weekly meeting experiment starts now and will run for six months. It will become permanent if trial period is a success. Long weekends will still be no meeting weekends. Some meetings may have to be cancelled due to church requirements. ANGHARAD will contact the church and try to establish a schedule. A&S activities will happen as usual, just beginning at 2:30 instead of 4:00. 8. STEPHIN's Cryptography class will be held at the church on Sunday, 30 March. Please remember the earlier (2:30) start time. 9. Autocrat's Day Off (ADO) - it is not clear whether or not the ADO weekend conflicts with Baronial Muster. It appears not, but must be checked. Baronial Muster is likely to have an increased attendance due to site improvements, the attendance of TRM and the Great Northern Army. If the ADO site is not booked on its usual weekend, the Canton could lose it's "grandfathered" status and thus the site. It is a beautiful site and it would be a shame to lose it. SUSANNA is not autocratting ADO this year. Bids must be in by April 30. Attendee comfort levels: nude swimming issue must be addressed. It was recommended that specific times be set aside as "clothing optional" and "family" times. 10. Around the Room Items: a. GEOFFROI - Chronicle wants articles. b. ELEANOR - Hard & Soft on Tuesday evening at 7:30 c. RICHARD - has made a banner and Hare finials. Anyone wishing to make similar finials may learn how at the West End A & S (see webpage). d. GABRIELLE - is collecting money for Just A Feast e. CHIARA - Gulf Wars was great. Don't drive that far with your closest friends. f. CHRISTABELL - the school demo didn't happen as there were not enough people available. g. TSIVIA - a school in Kemptville will book now for next Hare. Details must still be negotiated. ANGHARAD mentioned that St. Patrick's High School in Alta Vista is also under review for Hare. h. ANGHARAD reminds all that Scriptorium is on Friday. Baronial blanks and calligraphers badly needed. ANGHARAD will send bookings to the Calendar Secretary ASAP for Hare and Practicum. Meeting adjourned at 4:47 p.m. Canton Meeting Notes for 23 March 2003 1
