Class DescriptionsTo register for classes, please e-mail Dubhease ingen Laoidheach with the following information: 1. Your full SCA name 2. Your e-mail address 3. The titles of the classes you want to register for. You will receive a response confirming your registration or your place on the waiting list for classes with limited registration. If you do not receive a confirmation, you may not be registered! Registration is first-come/first-served based on the order in which they are received, beginning on February 11,2008. Track One: Leather Class Title: Intro to Celtic Knotwork on Leather Instructor: Lord William of the Northwilds Class Length: 1 hour Fee: $10.00 Description: Learn leather-carving tips Time Slot: 3:30-4:30 Notes: Limited to 5 students Room: Boardroom Class Title:Intermediate Celtic Knotwork on Leather Instructor:Lord William of the Northwilds Class Length: 1/2 hour (shared timeslot with advanced) Fee: $10.00 Description:Learn leather-carving tips. Time Slot: 10:30-11:30 Notes: Room: Kitchen/Studio Class Title: Leatherworking 2 Instructor: Lord Tiberius Class Length: 2 hours Fee: $20.00 Description: A practical class on sewing ones own falconry/hunting belt pouch. Time Slot: 1:30 - 3:30 Notes: Limited to 8 hands-on students. Observers welcome. Materials will be pre-cut, in a kit, which includes leather, sinew, and ring. Room: Boardroom Track Two: Fibre Arts Class Title: Embroidery Tips and Tricks Instructor: Lady Marina Anastasia Ozeroski Class Length: 2 hours Fee: $10, or $20 if purchasing an embroidery hoop from Marina (must be arranged in advance!) Description: So many of us are self-taught that we don't always learn the tips and tricks that other embroiderers know. Come learn about the various tools you can use as well as some interesting techniques to add to your stitching repertoire. Types of embroidery worked during the middle ages will also be discussed. Time Slot: 1:30-3:30 Notes: Limited to 10 students. Please bring 4" embroidery hoop, scissors, and a small light coloured hand towel if you have one. Please contact Marina (MarinaO at magma dot ca) in advance if you do not have an embroidery hoop. Room: Ridgemont Class Title: Beginner fingerloop braiding Instructor: Mistress Keja Class Length: 1 hour Fee: Donations accepted for handouts. Description: This class is intended for those who are interested in lace/string making as an alternative method to lucetting. No prior knowledge of the craft is required. Supplies provided. Donations accepted for handouts. Time Slot: 1:30 - 2:30 Notes: Limited to 10 students. Room: Theatre Class Title: Intermediate Fingerloop Braiding. Instructor: Jeanne de Robin Class Length: 1 hour Fee: Donations accepted for handouts. Description: For those who wish to try more complex patterns. Depending on the amount of participants, the class may try 2 person fingerloop braiding, or just more complex single person patterns. Prior knowledge of fingerloop braiding required. Supplies provided. Donations accepted for handouts. Time Slot: 2:30 - 3:30 Notes: Limited to 8 hands-on students, unlimited observers. Room: Theatre Class Title: Elizabethan Metal Lace Instructor: Lucie DuFresne (Ph.D, UOttawa) Class Length: 2.5 hours Fee: $5 Description: Elizabethan metal lace: come make a metal wire lace bracelet/pendant in a pattern and using the same techniques as would have been used by Elizabethan lace makers. No experience required. Equipment and supplies provided. People who want to work some more on their bracelet may also set up a chair near the table where Lucie will be selling items from the estate of the late Master Naon. Room: Ridgemont Class Title: Period Knitting Instructor: Lady Lerthan Class Length: 1 hour Fee: none Description: Time Slot: 11:30 - 12:30 Notes: Period knitting Room: Kitchen/Studio Track Three: Miscellaneous Sciences Class Title: Bowyer Class Instructor: Lord Edhan Class Length: 2 hours Fee: none Description: Time Slot: 3:30 - 5:30 Notes: Limited attendance Room: Ridgemont Class Title: Fire-Starting with Flint and Steel Instructor: Duncan Macleoid Class Length: 1 hour Fee: none Description: A discussion on how fire starting happened in the days before BIC lighters. The class will move outdoors in order to learn the hands-on technique of starting a small, controlled fire. Time Slot: 4:30 - 5:30 Notes: Room: Kitchen/Studio Class Title: Gardening in the Middle Ages Instructor: Alais de Poitiers Class Length: 1 hour Fee: $1 for handouts Description: This class provides an overview of the types of gardens seen within SCA period, from the formal garden of la Roman de la Rose to the kitchen garden of an Elizabethan yeoman. Images from works of art and existing recreated gardens will be used, and constructing your own "period" garden structures will be discussed. Time Slot: 4:30 - 5:30 Notes: Room: Theatre Track Four: Miscellaneous Arts Class Title: Artist for a Day Instructor: Alais de Poitiers and Marguerite Gingraix Class Length: 2 hours Fee: donation ($3 suggested) Description: This class is an opportunity to play with authentic materials and techniques used before 1600; come and play "Great Master" with us! Supplies will be provided to play with egg tempera, natural pigments, fresco and more. Don't worry about your skill level - finger painting is welcome! Time Slot: 1:30 - 3:30 Notes: Limited to 12 students. Room: Kitchen / Studio Class Title: The Giant Egg Project Instructor: Lady Lucia Enzinas Class Length: 1 hour Fee: $1 Description: Giant (pain in the neck) Egg; Cooking period recipes with modern (in)conveniences. How to make the Giant Egg and a discussion on the trouble modern cooking tools give us. Time Slot: 3:30 - 4:30 Notes: Room: Kitchen / Studio Class Title: Gypsy Stereotypes: Roma and Medieval Portraits Instructor: Mistress Keja Class Length: 1 hour Fee: none Description: This class is a discussion of some of the types of paintings, drawings and woodcuts that can be found of Gypsies in Europe during the Medieval period. Fact and fiction in representation will be discussed and compared with written documentation from the same periods. Time Slot: 10:30 - 11:30 Notes: Room: Theatre Class Title: Sewn Hats & Hoods Instructor: Jhone Woodcote Class Length: 2 hours Fee: Donation for materials ($5 suggested) Description: Come make yourself a hat to top of that great garb you already have, or are about to make. I will have a variety of patterns, and fabric available to suit a range of periods and North European cultures, or bring a picture, and if time allows I will help you work out how to make that headdress that has been puzzling you. Time Slot: 1:30-3:30 Notes: Limited to 6 students. Please bring your own scissors and feel free to bring fabric - 1 metre is normally sufficient. Students should have basic sewing skills. Students should email Jhone (chadwell at sympatico dot ca) in advance with the century/location of their persona/chosen garb/desired hat. Room: Heron Room Class Title: The Poetry Game Instructor: Baroness TSivia bas Tamara Class Length: 1 hour Fee: none Description: Come have some fun and exercise your “poetry” muscles! Participants get to draw a first line out of a bag, and have 1/2 hr to 45 minutes to compose a poem starting with that line. Poems will be read aloud at the end of the class, and may even become part of the potluck feast entertainment. There MAY be handouts of some simple period poetry-forms available as guidelines. Time Slot: 3:30 - 4:30 Notes: Room: Theatre Track Five: Music and Dance Class Title: Medieval Music Without Theory Instructor: Duncan Macleoid Class Length: 1 hour Fee: none Description: This class will be one of listening to some of the music from the periods of the SCA, with an eye (ear?) to learning how to appreciate some of those forms. Time Slot: 1:30 - 2:30 Notes: Room: St. Peters Room Class Title: Italian Dance Class Instructor: Wilhelm von Potruff Class Length: 2 hours Fee: none Description: An introductory class to Italian Renaissance Dances. The necessary steps for Italian Renaissance Dances will be taught along with the dances and a bit of the history of Western Dance. Time Slot: 3:30 - 5:30 Notes:Please wear good shoes and clothes that are easy to move in. Room: Heron Room Class Title: Beginner’s Celtic Harp class Instructor: Muirenn Peregrina Class Length: 1 hour Fee: none Description:Learn leather-carving tips. Quen Quer Que, Sellenger's Round, parts of the bransle suite, Washerwoman bransle, Gathering Peascods, and Petit Riens may be taught as time and interest allows. No experience necessary.
